Calm Down Colorado

Great news in the US as the first ever legal cannabis sales in the world are taking place. Or are they? They aren’t.

Despite the headlines, in places that should know better, they are wrong.

Huffington Post: World’s First Recreational Marijuana Sales License Issued In Colorado

Wrong.

Forbes:  World’s First Recreational Marijuana Sales License Issued In Colorado

Wrong.

Why is this wrong?

Because recreational cannabis has been available in India for a very long time indeed. The first recorded use was around 1000 BC.

What is more, it is sold at government licensed ‘bhang’ shops, as they are called. They just don’t call them dispensaries.

Let us consult Wikipedia:

“Bhang has been used as an intoxicant for centuries in the Indian sub-continent”

and further:

“Cultivation of cannabis is government regulated, and illegal without a government permit. Sale of bhang is also government regulated and illegal without a permit.”

So the people of India are selling cannabis to the people via government licensed and regulated shops. Doesn’t that sound familiar to you at all? There has been a Bhang shop in Jaisalmer, since 1977.  I visited one in Pushkar. You can’t beat a good bhang lassi.

So, I’m afraid Colorado, this is not the first ever time that this has happened.

Nevertheless, this is indeed a historic moment marking the beginning of the end of a very nasty period of unnecessary and evil marijuana prohibition. I am still struggling to believe it’s actually happening.
